Las Vegas police investigate homicide, attempted robbery on Lake Mead near Nellis

Las Vegas police are investigating a deadly shooting that unfolded early Sunday morning in the east valley after a reported attempted robbery near Lake Mead Boulevard and Nellis Boulevard.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said officers were called at about 12:39 a.m. to the area of the 5000 block of East Lake Mead Boulevard near Nellis Boulevard after reports of two males armed with guns.

Police said the call was later updated to report that shots had been fired.

Officers who arrived found a man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Medical personnel were requested, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said additional officers located a second man in the 5000 block of Kell Lane. He was later identified as 39-year-old Robert Aguilar Jr. Police said Aguilar was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The LVMPD Homicide Section responded, and detectives determined the man who died had been open carrying a firearm and had just left a business in the area.

Police said Aguilar approached the victim and, at gunpoint, demanded the victim’s firearm. The victim drew his firearm, and the two exchanged gunfire, police said.

Aguilar was booked in absentia into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of open murder with a deadly weapon and robbery with a deadly weapon, police said.

The identification of the man who died, along with the cause and manner of death will be released through the Clark County Coroner’s Office, officials say.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the LVMPD Homicide Section at 702-828-3521.
